Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical need for enhancing the blast resistance of reinforced concrete columns, particularly in civilian infrastructure vulnerable to terrorist attacks. The study introduces an innovative hardening technique using externally applied post-tensioned strands, a method that is both practical and economical compared to traditional approaches like steel jacketing and fiber-reinforced polymers. Through experimental testing, the chapter examines the effectiveness of different post-tensioning configurations, including single-harped, double-harped, and triple-harped profiles, in mitigating blast-induced damage. The results demonstrate a significant increase in blast load resistance, with hardened columns showing superior performance in maintaining axial load-carrying capacity and reducing residual deflections. The chapter also discusses the practical implications of these findings, highlighting the potential of this method to preserve building integrity and prevent civilian casualties in the event of an explosion. The study concludes with recommendations for further research to optimize the initial level of post-tensioning and assess secondary effects on adjacent structural members.
