Abstract

The article delves into the challenges and solutions for enhancing optical wireless communication performance, specifically focusing on MIMO systems using BPSK and DPSK modulations with heterodyne detection. It addresses the impact of atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors on FSO communication, providing a detailed mathematical model and performance analysis. The study compares the performance of BPSK and DPSK modulations under various conditions, including turbulence alone, misalignment alone, and the combined effects of both. The article also introduces the concept of power penalty to measure the additional power required to maintain reliable communication in the presence of impairments. Numerical results and simulations are presented to validate the theoretical findings and highlight the superior performance of MIMO systems over SISO systems, particularly with BPSK modulation.
