Abstract

Bio-degumming was gradually become more attracting strategy for obtaining of biomass fiber from bast of plant, which was considered as green and low-carbon approach compared with conventional chemical degumming. However, the current bio-degumming technology cannot meet the required effect and efficiency on a pilot scale. In this investigation, a novel strategy for improving bio-degumming was proposed by breaking of biomass recalcitrance in flax with clean pretreatment method. It is proved that biomass recalcitrance in bast fibers can be effectively broken by physical pretreatment, especially by cryogenic pretreatment. In process of cryogenic pretreatment, non-cellulose substance in flax was obviously decreased and the connection between cellulose and non-cellulose components of flax was evidently disrupted. This resulted in the increase of specific surface area of the bast fiber and the enhancing of binding sites for enzymes. As a result, bioavailability of flax was improved and the efficiency of bio-degumming can be increased with the breaking of biomass recalcitrance in flax. Thus, a clean strategy was provided by breaking of biomass recalcitrance in flax with cryogenic pretreatment for bio-degumming.
