Abstract

This chapter delves into the effectiveness of Bridge Weigh-in-Motion (BWIM) systems in monitoring overweight traffic on bridges, focusing on the challenges posed by multiple vehicle presence and dynamic effects. It explores the use of localized strain responses to identify and localize single and multiple vehicle events, highlighting the sensitivity of these responses to vehicle position and dynamic effects. The study presents a detailed case study of an instrumented slab-on-girder highway bridge, discussing the sensor layout, data collection, and signal processing techniques used to analyze loading events. It also examines the variability in measurements due to driver behavior and dynamic effects, providing insights into the limitations and potential improvements of BWIM systems. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the implications of these findings for the design and operation of BWIM systems, emphasizing the need for further research and data collection to generalize threshold values and improve system accuracy.
