Abstract

The article investigates the brittle failure modes and mechanisms of foliated rocks, such as slate, phyllite, schist, and gneiss, under uniaxial compression. It combines laboratory testing with particle flow modeling to explore the effects of loading direction and fabric factors on rock failure. The study highlights the complex interplay between foliation planes, mineral composition, and stress conditions in determining failure patterns. Key findings include the influence of confining pressure on failure modes and the role of phyllosilicate minerals in crack propagation. The research provides valuable insights into the mechanical behavior of anisotropic rocks, contributing to the understanding of rock mass stability and support design in geotechnical engineering.
