Abstract

The article delves into the complex interplay between compressive strain and delamination of TiN films on stainless steel substrates, particularly in the presence of stress concentrations. It presents a comprehensive study of the mechanical behaviors of thin films subjected to tensile loading, focusing on the development of channel cracks and subsequent buckling. The research employs both optical and scanning electron microscopy, along with transient thermo-reflectance, to characterize the delaminated regions and evaluate the size of partially delaminated films. The findings highlight the critical role of strain distribution around a notch in initiating buckling and delamination, offering valuable insights into the failure mechanisms of protective coatings under stress.
