Abstract

Thomas Jackson was a determined man. Not wanting to miss his chance to purchase the Lead Mines in the backcountry of southwestern Virginia, the British immigrant traveled from Wythe County some 250 miles to Richmond where the state offered the metal works at auction. In the Virginia of 1806, this was a difficult journey. Local lore claims that Jackson made it without frequenting the bars and taverns along the way as did his competitors. Arriving at the sale first, his bid secured the Wythe County lead enterprise for himself and two partners.
