Continental has redesigned the bus cockpit with up to three displays and two freely configurable control panels. The modular driver's workplace will be showcased at the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2018.

In buses and coaches, the modular driver's workplace (mDWP) aims to make the cockpit more flexible and ergonomic. Speedometers and mechanical switches have been replaced with displays and electronic control panels. The central fully programmable 12.3-inch TFT display (MultiViu Professional 12) displays various combination instruments and information. The central display has two control panels to its left and right, and alternates between driving and bus stop modes, which are shown on the screen. The display can also be used as a monitor for camera systems. The modular design also allows the addition of two other displays.
Besides drivers, manufacturers could also benefit from this modular workplace since the cockpit arrangement can be adapted to their application and customer requirements. “As a technology company, Continental is broadly positioned, so we are able to develop a comprehensive system from many different components and that offers great added value for the vehicle manufacturer,” says Dr. Michael Ruf, Head of the Business Unit Commercial Vehicles & Aftermarket at Continental. The freely programmable control panels are connected via CAN bus and comply with both the EBSF (European Bus System of the Future) standard and the Association of German Transport Companies' (VDV) requirements. Serial production is scheduled to begin in 2019.
