Abstract

The chapter delves into the origins and evolution of the business ecosystem (BE) concept, tracing its roots back to ecology and its adoption in economics. It highlights the surge in interest and publications on the topic, driven by digitization and the spread of digital platforms. The author compares the BE concept with supply chain management (SCM), noting the overlap and apparent equivalence between the two. The chapter also discusses the criticisms and similarities between BE and SC, citing various perspectives from the literature. It aims to address the lack of clarity in distinguishing between the two concepts by identifying key elements that differentiate them. The study involves a literature analysis and semi-structured interviews with professionals in the field, resulting in a list of 105 elements that can be used to distinguish BEs from SCs. An empirical study was conducted to validate these elements, revealing that while some differences are perceived by researchers, there is still a lack of consensus. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the importance of clearly defining the object of research to enable further targeted studies on BEs.
