Abstract

Business Model Innovation is an emerging topic in the field of innovation strategy, gaining relevance due to the disruptive changes it brings to various industries. The chapter defines the concept of a business model, tracing its origins to the early 2000s with the rise of Internet companies. It highlights the importance of business models in bringing technological innovations to market and discusses the key elements that constitute a business model. The Business Model Canvas, a qualitative and informal tool, is introduced as a practical approach for structuring business models. The chapter explores the main elements of the Canvas, including customer segments, value propositions, channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, key activities, key resources, key partnerships, and cost structure. It also discusses the use of the Canvas in new and existing firms, unbundling business models, competitive benchmarking, scenario analysis, and the e3value tool for representing business models from a value system perspective. The chapter concludes with an overview of the Business Model Design theory, emphasizing the importance of understanding the environment, designing value creation mechanisms, and evaluating the impact of new business models.
