Abstract

This chapter delves into the calibration process of the Ontario Highway Bridge Design Code (OHBDC), the first limit state bridge design code in North America. It highlights the pioneering use of reliability-based design principles, which were a significant departure from traditional allowable stress design (ASD) methods. The text outlines the major challenges faced by the code development committee, including the lack of calibration examples and statistical data on loads and resistance. It details the calibration procedure, which involved selecting representative bridges, formulating limit state functions, and developing statistical parameters for load and resistance. The chapter also discusses the reliability analysis procedures, including the calculation of reliability indices and the selection of target reliability indices. Additionally, it covers the determination of load and resistance factors, which were crucial for ensuring the safety and reliability of bridge designs.
