Abstract

The chapter delves into the calorimetric efficiency determination of power electronic variable speed drives, emphasizing the IEC 61800-9-2 standard and its three primary testing methods: single component loss determination, input–output approach, and calorimetric measurement. The calorimetric method, which measures heat loss to determine power loss, is highlighted for its accuracy in measuring very high-efficiency drives. The chapter introduces an air-cooled indirect balanced calorimeter test bench, explaining its design, components, and measurement procedure. It also discusses the challenges and considerations in minimizing heat leakage and ensuring accurate power loss determination. The chapter concludes with a detailed measurement procedure, including calibration and initialization steps, designed to achieve precise and reproducible results.
