Abstract

The article delves into the consequences of elite allegations of election fraud on voter turnout, with a specific focus on the 2021 Georgia Senate runoff elections. President Trump's claims of fraud, amplified through cable news and social media, raised questions about the integrity of the electoral process. The study examines whether these allegations demobilized supporters or stimulated turnout, using both precinct-level and individual-level data. The findings suggest that Trump supporters experienced a significant drop in turnout, with precincts where Trump was popular showing larger declines. The article also explores the persistence of these effects in subsequent elections and discusses the broader implications of misinformation on democratic participation.
