Abstract

The article delves into the challenges of monitoring wildlife populations, particularly in tropical rainforests, where traditional methods like line transect distance sampling (LTDS) face limitations. It introduces camera traps as a cost-effective and non-invasive alternative, highlighting recent advancements in density estimation methods that do not require individual identification of animals. The study compares three camera trap models—Camera Trap Distance Sampling (CTDS), the Random Encounter Model (REM), and the time-to-event (TTE) model—against reference estimates from spatial capture-recapture (SCR) surveys for ocelots and jaguars. The results indicate that while these models can provide similar estimates to SCR for common species, they perform poorly for rarer species like jaguars. The article also compares the UD models with LTDS estimates for eight other species, finding that UD models tend to be more accurate and precise for species that are difficult to detect by observers or have nocturnal activity patterns. The study concludes that UD models are a promising tool for monitoring medium to large-sized terrestrial species, but their application for extremely rare species remains a challenge to be addressed.
