Abstract

The chapter examines the critical factors influencing road capacity on hilly terrains, particularly under heterogeneous traffic conditions. It begins by defining capacity and discussing the three primary operating conditions: traffic, roadway, and control conditions. The study focuses on the impact of vertical alignment, specifically gradients, on road capacity. It highlights the challenges posed by hilly roads, including the risk of accidents and landslides, and the necessity of accurate capacity estimation for effective road planning and design. The research employs the Greenshields model and fundamental traffic flow diagrams to estimate the capacity of two-lane hilly roads. It establishes a relationship between gradient and capacity, demonstrating that an increase in gradient leads to a decrease in capacity. Additionally, the study explores the correlation between operating speed and capacity, showing that a reduction in operating speed results in decreased highway capacity. The findings underscore the importance of considering gradient in road design and planning to ensure efficient traffic flow and safety. The chapter also discusses the limitations of the study and suggests areas for future research, including the impact of other geometric and environmental factors on road capacity.
