Abstract

This study delves into the carbon storage potential of incineration ashes, focusing on municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) and co-combustion (CC) ashes, both fly ash (FA) and bottom ash (BA). The research compares the CO2 uptake capacities of these ashes using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), highlighting the influence of particle size and CO2 concentration on carbonation efficiency. Key findings reveal that MSWI FA exhibits the highest CO2 uptake, particularly when particle sizes are smaller than 63 micrometers. The study also explores the potential of these ashes in concrete production, where they can serve as sustainable binders and enhance carbon capture. Additionally, the research discusses the role of CaO and MgO content in determining the carbon sequestration capacity of different ashes. The conclusions emphasize the importance of optimizing particle size distribution to maximize CO2 uptake during carbonation curing of incineration ashes, paving the way for more sustainable construction practices.
