Abstract

The article focuses on the cationic copolymerization of isobutylene (IB) and bio-renewable β-myrcene to create sustainable elastomers. It begins by discussing the historical context and significance of cationic polymerization, highlighting its unique reaction mechanism and applications in various industries. The study then delves into the challenges of limited raw materials and the need for sustainable alternatives. Isobutylene, a widely used monomer in cationic polymerization, is examined, along with its successful commercial applications. The research explores the living cationic polymerization of IB and the synthesis of high-activity polyisobutylene. Conversely, the cationic polymerization of β-myrcene is limited, prompting the study of its copolymerization with IB. The article details the optimization of the copolymerization process, including the effects of TiCl4 concentration, monomer concentration, and feed ratios on the polymerization efficiency and molecular weight distribution. The structural characteristics of the synthesized copolymers are analyzed using 1H NMR spectroscopy, revealing the presence of 1,4- and 3,4-structures. The thermal stability of the copolymers is also investigated using DSC. The findings provide valuable data for the development of sustainable bio-based elastomers and advancements in cationic polymerization technology.
