Abstract

This chapter delves into the intricate causes and mechanisms behind bridge failures, highlighting the critical role bridges play in transportation infrastructure. It explores the two primary types of failures: collapse and deformation, each with its own subcategories such as fissure, shear, twisting, bending, deflection, and torsion. The text discusses the evolution of bridge materials, from traditional iron and concrete to modern composites like ultra-high performance concrete and fiber-reinforced polymers, which have significantly improved bridge performance. Natural disasters, including earthquakes, wind, cyclones, scour, and landslides, are identified as major contributors to bridge failures, with detailed explanations of their mechanisms. The chapter also addresses unnatural causes such as design defects, overloading, collisions, fires, and lack of maintenance, providing a comprehensive overview of the factors that can compromise bridge integrity. Real-world examples, like the Andheri bridge failure and the Morbi suspension bridge collapse, illustrate the devastating impact of these failures. The conclusion underscores the importance of balancing cost, capacity, and safety to prevent system failures, emphasizing the need for thorough investigation and understanding of bridge failure causes to reduce the probability of future incidents.
