Challenges and Future Trends of EEG: Application of the Human-Centred Design Approach in the Paediatric Field

This chapter delves into the challenges and future trends of electroencephalography (EEG) in paediatric care, with a focus on improving usability and comfort for young patients. The research conducted at the University of Florence and Meyer Children's Hospital highlights the limitations of traditional EEG systems, such as the use of conductive gel electrodes and the bulkiness of equipment, which can cause discomfort and anxiety for children. The study employs human-centred design methodologies to analyse and address these issues, leading to the development of the Cosmos+ device. This innovative EEG system features dry electrodes, modular design, and wireless connectivity, making it more comfortable and user-friendly for both patients and healthcare professionals. The chapter also discusses the potential applications of the Cosmos+ device in clinical, research, and home monitoring settings, emphasizing its role in advancing paediatric neurophysiology. The results of this research pave the way for more effective and patient-centred EEG monitoring in the future.
