Abstract

The article delves into the energy and emissions challenges faced by the ceramics industry, highlighting the need for a transition to more sustainable practices. It discusses the high energy consumption and emissions of the industry, with a focus on the specific challenges and opportunities in the German ceramics sector. The authors present a range of solutions, including fuel switching, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and partial electrification of burners. The article also introduces a methodology developed by FfE Munich for creating company-specific decarbonization strategies, emphasizing the importance of stakeholder involvement and continuous strategy updating. The research underscores the potential for significant emissions reductions and the need for collaboration between industry and policymakers to achieve climate protection goals.
