Abstract

This article investigates the evolving justifications for educational inequalities, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. It examines how perceptions of meritocracy and inequality shape public attitudes towards educational fairness, using Chile as a case study. The research reveals that the pandemic, along with economic and social upheavals, has significantly influenced how individuals justify educational disparities. Key findings include the impact of state benefits on reducing the justification of educational inequalities and the differential effects of meritocratic beliefs based on effort versus talent. The study also explores how economic priorities and inequality perceptions interact to mold public opinions on educational justice. By analyzing longitudinal data, the article provides a comprehensive view of how crises can recalibrate societal views on educational fairness, offering valuable insights into the dynamics of inequality justification in times of uncertainty.
