Abstract

The article delves into the differing beliefs about happiness, categorized as hedonic (focusing on immediate pleasure) and eudaimonic (emphasizing long-term meaning and self-actualization). It introduces life history theory, which posits that early-life experiences, particularly childhood socioeconomic status, influence these beliefs. The study examines how individuals from varying childhood SES backgrounds develop distinct happiness perspectives, with those from lower SES more likely to endorse hedonic beliefs, and those from higher SES favoring eudaimonic beliefs. This research, conducted through two studies, provides intriguing insights into the development of happiness beliefs and their connection to early-life experiences, contributing significantly to the understanding of well-being and its determinants.
