Abstract

The chapter 'China and the Arab Region: Dynamics of Engagement' examines China's growing influence in the Arab region, with a particular focus on the Persian Gulf sub-region and Egypt. It traces the evolution of China's relations with Gulf states, from initial suspicion and mutual enmity to a strategic partnership driven by economic interests and shared values. The chapter highlights China's balancing act between regional rivals like Iran and Saudi Arabia, its reliance on the US security umbrella, and the challenges it faces in maintaining its neutrality. Additionally, it explores China's engagement with Egypt, emphasizing the historical and civilizational aspects of their diplomatic discourse and the potential benefits of Egypt's participation in the Belt and Road Initiative. The chapter also discusses China's quasi-mediation role in regional conflicts, such as those in Libya and Syria, and the factors influencing its limited involvement. Overall, the chapter offers a comprehensive analysis of China's strategic engagement with the Arab region, underscoring its significance in the global power dynamics.
