Abstract

The article delves into the chromatographic and spectrophotometric analysis of heartwood extracts from four Pterocarpus species, including P. santalinus, P. macrocarpus, P. marsupium, and P. soyauxii. The study aims to develop unique fingerprints for species identification using thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Additionally, UV-Vis spectrophotometry is employed to further distinguish the species. The research highlights the importance of these techniques in supplementing traditional wood anatomy methods for accurate species identification. The results demonstrate significant differences between the species, with P. santalinus showing distinct characteristics that can help in its authentication. The study concludes that chromatographic and spectrophotometric analyses can effectively supplement wood anatomy in identifying Pterocarpus species, particularly in cases where anatomical features alone are insufficient.
