As the CIMAC Congress 2016 returns to Helsinki after 35 years, we can reflect how far the large engine industry has come over that period. Apart from the addition of casings over four stroke injectors, engines look roughly the same but their performance and emissions have advanced almost beyond recognition. Simultaneously concentration and globalisation has changed the composition of the industry, while the emergence of globally active consultants allows manufacturers throughout the world to develop state-of-the-art, electronic engines, using the full range of modern computer-assisted development techniques such as finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, failure mode and effects analysis and multi-criteria optimisation. …
