Abstract

This chapter explores the effects of Ukraine's education and decentralization reforms on social cohesion in the border regions of Chernivtsi and Kharkiv. Using Chan et al.'s framework, it analyzes subjective and objective indicators of cohesion, such as trust, civic participation, and belonging. The study reveals variations in attitudes towards reforms based on socio-demographic factors and ethnicity. Notably, the decentralization reform is viewed positively, while the language of instruction in schools is divisive. The chapter also uses multiple correspondence analysis to visualize how social cohesion indicators cluster, revealing typologies of respondents based on inclusion and exclusion. This comprehensive analysis provides valuable insights into the complex dynamics of social cohesion in a diverse society undergoing significant reforms.
