Abstract

This chapter delves into the comparison of decision tree (DT) classification and regression models for learning decision-maker (DM) preferences in interactive evolutionary multi-objective optimization algorithms (iEMOAs). The study focuses on the effectiveness of these models in adapting to and modeling DM preferences, using a variety of utility functions and benchmark problems. The experimental setup involves the use of a Machine Decision-Maker (MDM) to simulate DM preferences, with the accuracy of the models evaluated across different interaction stages. The results demonstrate that DT binary classification consistently outperforms DT regression in learning DM preferences, attributed to the simplicity and robustness of the pairwise comparison approach. The study also highlights the impact of different utility functions and the number of objective functions on the accuracy of preference learning. The findings suggest that while DT classification is more effective, both models can be enhanced with further refinements. The chapter concludes with suggestions for future research directions, including the integration of other machine learning techniques and the development of dynamic preference learning methods.
