Abstract

The article delves into the effects of climatic variability on household size and demographic processes in sub-Saharan Africa. It examines how temperature and precipitation anomalies influence household size through fertility, marriage, and family co-residence patterns. Using data from 27 censuses across 11 countries, the study reveals significant associations between high temperatures and increased household size, driven by higher fertility and men's marriage rates. The analysis highlights the complexity and heterogeneity of climate effects across different demographic components and regions. The findings contribute to a better understanding of household-level adaptations to climate change, with implications for policy and development strategies.
