Abstract

The chapter presents a newly discovered optical illusion, the 'cloud illusion', which appears when objects rotate around a blank area. The study first estimated the latency of the Kanizsa Triangle illusion and then observed the cloud illusion when rotating the Kanizsa triangle. Further experiments revealed that this illusion occurs even without subjective contours. The optimal rotation speed for the densest clouds was found to be approximately one revolution per second. Various stimuli were tested, including different numbers and colors of circles, and even inverted brightness. The illusion was also confirmed using a mechanical rotating device, ruling out screen-related factors. The cloud illusion was compared to the Hermann grid and Ehrenstein illusions, highlighting its unique characteristics. The chapter concludes by suggesting that further investigation into similar illusions may lead to a unified understanding of visual illusions.
