Abstract

This chapter delves into the potential trade strategies for Zimbabwe under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) using a partial equilibrium model. The analysis highlights the importance of the AfCFTA in boosting intra-African trade and reducing food imports, with significant potential for economic growth and poverty reduction. The study identifies key products such as maize, soybeans, and tobacco as having high export potential, while also addressing the challenges of trade diversion and revenue loss. The chapter provides a detailed overview of Zimbabwe's current trade policies and their shortcomings, emphasizing the need for genuine liberalization efforts and the development of the agricultural sector. Additionally, it explores the impact of tariff reductions on consumer welfare and offers strategies for mitigating potential losses. The findings reveal that Zimbabwe stands to gain significantly from the AfCFTA, particularly in the agricultural sector, but must implement careful policies to maximize these benefits. The chapter concludes with actionable recommendations for Zimbabwe to enhance its trade position and fully leverage the opportunities presented by the AfCFTA.
