Abstract

The chapter introduces Collaborative Verifiable Delay Functions (coVDFs), a cryptographic primitive where multiple parties compute a delay function together. It extends traditional VDFs to a multi-party setting, enabling applications like collaborative work, fair auctions, and public randomness beacons. The authors define coVDFs formally, categorizing them into sequential and parallel types, and introduce new security properties such as traceability and robustness. They present two constructions: one based on repeated squaring and another on gossip and sequential hashing. The chapter also discusses practical applications and provides security proofs, making it a significant contribution to the field of cryptography and blockchain technology.
