Abstract

The Supreme Court’s recent ruling in the Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard/UNC cases has reignited debates on affirmative action and college diversity. This article examines the unintended consequences of DEI programs, which have led to the suppression of viewpoint diversity, reduced interactional diversity, and potentially negative outcomes for minorities. Through an institutional analysis, the author argues that college administrators are influenced by DEI norms, even when they prefer more holistic conceptions of diversity. The article also analyzes online diversity content from four universities, revealing the pervasive influence of DEI discourse. The author concludes by proposing a new policy paradigm that emphasizes holistic diversity and promotes viewpoint and interactional diversity.
