Combine Effect of Sulphur-Chitin on Aging Susceptibility of Asphalt Binder

This study delves into the effects of combining sulphur and chitin to modify asphalt binders, aiming to mitigate oxidative aging. The research highlights the critical issue of intermediate temperature performance in asphalt mixes, which is often compromised by oxidative aging leading to excessive stiffness and early cracking. The investigation explores the use of chitin, a naturally abundant polymer, alongside sulphur to enhance the aging resistance of asphalt. Through extensive laboratory testing, the study evaluates various aging indices based on physical, rheological, and chemical parameters. Key findings indicate that the addition of chitin significantly improves the resistance to aging, as evidenced by increased penetration retention, reduced softening point change, and enhanced ductility retention. Rheological analyses reveal that the combination of sulphur and chitin decreases rutting and fatigue aging indices, suggesting better durability and cracking resistance. Chemical analyses further support these findings, showing a reduction in the carbonyl index, which is indicative of lower aging susceptibility. The study concludes that the integration of chitin with sulphur in asphalt modification can effectively decelerate the aging process, thereby enhancing the material's longevity and performance under intermediate temperature conditions.
