Abstract

This article delves into the effects of cadmium (Cd) and strontium (Sr) on the solidification behavior, microstructure, and mechanical properties of two widely used aluminum-silicon (Al-Si) alloys, AC4C and ADC12. The study systematically investigates how different Sr/Cd ratios influence key solidification parameters such as nucleation and growth temperatures, recalescence, coherency point, and solid fraction evolution. It also explores the impact on the microstructure, particularly the secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) and the morphology of the eutectic silicon phase. The mechanical properties, specifically Vickers hardness, are correlated with the observed microstructural features. The research concludes that Cd does not significantly interfere with the modification action of Sr or alter the solidification kinetics and resulting properties of the alloys. Instead, the Si content is identified as the primary factor affecting solidification behavior and mechanical properties. The article provides valuable insights into the compatibility of Cd with Sr modification in Al-Si cast alloys, contributing to enhanced process control and material performance in industrial applications involving recycled aluminum.
