According to the company, the fully driverless Nuro R1 from former Google employees Dave Ferguson and Jiajun Zhu could transform last-mile goods delivery and local retail trade. Unlike other automated vehicles, the R1 was designed from the ground up for goods delivery and not passenger transport.
With its flexible interior design, the compact delivery van is designed to provide an efficient platform for transporting a wide range of goods for everyday use. The R1’s lidar sensors, radar and cameras should allow it to find its way in road traffic safely and drive right up to the customer’s front door where it can be opened by an app and the goods retrieved. Initial trials are due to start shortly.
The start-up was founded in 2016 with the aim of developing products with robotics and artificial intelligence for everyday use. Nuro has raised 92 million dollars in two rounds of fundraising and is now looking for retail partners and interested delivery service providers for its driverless delivery van.
