Prof. Dr. rer. nat. habil. Goerg H. Michler was head of the Institute for Materials Science at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, is honorary chairman of the Institute for Polymer Materials e.V. and chairman of the Heinz Bethge Foundation for Applied Electron Microscopy.

2. Directions of Electron Microscopy
Abstract
Overview of the main directions of electron microscopy and the requirements for the samples to be examined. Presentation of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) including ultrahigh-voltage TEM, ultrahigh-resolution TEM and analytical TEM, the techniques of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), emission electron microscopy and scanning probe microscopy, each with a description of the formation of contrast in the images and illustrated by characteristic image examples. A note on in-situ microscopy concludes the chapter.

3. Sample Preparations
Abstract
Starting with an overview on the main lines of preparation of compact materials for the different microscopy techniques, etching techniques including the focused ion beam technique and (cryo)ultramicrotomy are outlined with some possibilities for spatial structural analysis (3D analysis). Chemical and physical sample treatments are mentioned for an often necessary improvement of the contrast of the structures of interest.

4. Image Processing and Image Simulation
Abstract
Image processing and image analysis serve an improved representation of structures and their quantitative evaluation including spatial structure analysis. Methods of image simulation are required in particular for the interpretation of ultrahigh-resolution images.
