Rail vehicle manufacturer Stadler presented a new regional train at the Innotrans trade fair in Berlin. The RS Zero is powered either by hydrogen combustion engines or battery-electric. As a one-part railcar, the RS Zero will offer space for around 70 passengers, and as a two-part vehicle for around 150 passengers. Two combustion engines, each with an output of 200 kW, will generate electrical energy in the one-car unit and three combustion engines in the two-car unit. With emissions of less than 1 g CO2/kWh, the engine is considered emission-free according to current EU CO2 legislation. Power peaks are buffered by the traction battery, allowing the engines to be operated in the optimum characteristic map. This drive layout also enables the recuperation of kinetic energy and the extensive use of existing technology for maintenance.
