Abstract

This chapter delves into the ideological moderation and bias exhibited by large language models (LLMs) when translating politically sensitive texts between Hebrew and English. The study focuses on three prominent LLMs: ChatGPT-4, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and Gemini 2.0, and their handling of controversial terms such as 'terrorist,' 'militant,' and 'Judea and Samaria.' The analysis reveals distinct patterns of ideological bias, with ChatGPT-4 showing a higher degree of left-leaning moderation in Hebrew-to-English translations and right-leaning bias in English-to-Hebrew translations. Claude 3.5 Sonnet and Gemini 2.0, on the other hand, demonstrate a greater adherence to the ethical paradigm of faithful representation. The study also explores the impact of target language status, particularly the challenges posed by Hebrew as a low-resource language. By comparing the translation outputs with the source texts, the chapter identifies tendencies of lexical and ideological biases characteristic of each model. The findings underscore the importance of cross-linguistic evaluation in bias assessment and contribute to the ongoing discourse on fairness and transparency in natural language processing. The methodology presented here offers a replicable framework for future studies of multilingual AI behavior, emphasizing the need for further research in this critical area.
