Abstract

The chapter delves into the comparative analysis of the flammability characteristics of historic oak wood from 1869 and contemporary wood. It introduces the significance of understanding the fire resistance of historic wood in preserving historic buildings. The study focuses on the fire behavior of historic oak wood, comparing it with modern wood with similar grain and density. The research involves tests that assess the fire resistance of wood by observing the flame spread and time to ignition. The results indicate that historic wood exhibits lower heat release rates, total heat released, and effective heat of combustion compared to modern wood. Despite surface defects, historic wood shows better fire resistance properties, challenging the notion that modern wood is safer. The findings have implications for the preservation of historic buildings and the development of guidelines for assessing the fire resistance of historic wooden structures.
