Abstract

This chapter explores the critical factors influencing public transport choices in Algeria, with a focus on the comparative performance of trains and buses. The analysis reveals that bus passengers significantly outnumber train passengers, particularly on key routes such as Constantine to Algiers and Bejaia to Algiers. The study identifies five key performance indicators—accessibility, ticket price, reliability, comfort, safety, and travel time—as pivotal in shaping passenger preferences. Notably, travel time and reliability are the most influential factors for bus passengers, while ticket price and comfort are more prominent for train travelers. The chapter also highlights the challenges faced by the Algerian railway system, including delays and safety concerns, and suggests recommendations for improving both train and bus services. By examining passenger surveys and performance data, this chapter provides a nuanced understanding of the dynamics at play in Algeria's public transport landscape, offering insights that could inform policy decisions and service improvements.
