Abstract

This study compares the effectiveness of Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) and multi-gas analyzers (MGAs) in monitoring fire extinction within small-scale backdraft compartments. The research focuses on using CO2 and CO concentrations to identify profile features that correlate with visual extinction times. Key findings include the high accuracy of TDLAS in tracking visual fire extinction, with errors as low as 0.7% and 1.4% at lower and upper positions, respectively. The study also examines the performance of MGAs, which showed roughly 2.7% and 8.0% accuracy at lower and upper positions. The research concludes that TDLAS is a more reliable method for confirming fire extinction times in low-visibility environments. Additionally, the study explores the challenges of using temperature and oxygen profiles to identify extinction times, highlighting the limitations of these metrics. The findings provide valuable insights for fire safety professionals and researchers, offering a deeper understanding of the tools and methods available for monitoring fire dynamics in confined spaces.
