Abstract

This chapter delves into the contrasting soft power strategies of China and the United States in the Middle East, focusing on their governance models and public diplomacy efforts. It explores how China's centralized approach, characterized by the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and non-interference, aligns with the region's authoritarian regimes. In contrast, the US strategy emphasizes democratic values, cultural exchanges, and support for civil society. The chapter also examines the reception and impact of these strategies in specific countries such as Egypt, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. It highlights the growing attraction of Middle Eastern nations to China's non-interventionist approach and the potential challenges and criticisms facing both nations' strategies. The analysis offers insights into the future trends and implications of these soft power strategies for global diplomacy, emphasizing the role of non-state actors and the need for adaptation and innovation in public diplomacy efforts.
