Abstract

This study delves into the mechanical and environmental performance of old and new Canadian bricks, focusing on their potential for reuse in building alterations. The research evaluates the compressive and flexural strength of bricks using both destructive and non-destructive testing methods, as well as their environmental durability through absorption, boiling, and freeze-thaw tests. The findings reveal that new bricks exhibit superior mechanical properties and environmental durability compared to old bricks. However, the study also highlights the potential for old bricks to be reused in certain applications, provided they meet specific performance criteria. The results of this study are crucial for professionals involved in building alterations and renovations, as they provide valuable insights into the structural integrity and durability of both old and new brick specimens. The study also underscores the need for further research and refinement in the formulation of durability standards for bricks, particularly in the context of reuse and building alterations.
