Abstract

The chapter delves into the comparison between hybrid and non-hybrid membrane aerated biofilm reactors (MABRs) for treating municipal wastewater, focusing on nitrogen removal efficiency. It discusses the challenges of conventional biological nitrogen removal processes and introduces MABR as a promising technology with higher energy efficiency. The hybrid MABR (HMABR) integrates the fixed film activated sludge process (IFAS) with MABR, enhancing organic matter and nitrogen removal. The study compares the performance of HMABR and non-hybrid MABR under various organic and ammonia loading rates and C/N ratios, revealing that HMABR demonstrates significant advantages in nitrogen removal, particularly under high substrate loading rates. The chapter also highlights the importance of oxygen competition between nitrifier and heterotrophic bacteria, and the role of suspended solids in reducing biofouling and enhancing mass transfer.
