The aim of this chapter is to compare the Hungarian situation in biotechnology to world standards and recent developments. A set of criteria which is derived from the international experience is used as a yardstick to evaluate Hungary’s performance Therefore, within the first part of this chapter, the key factors for success in biotechnology will be identified. In the second part the Hungarian situation as described in chapter three will be analysed and evaluated against this framework of success factors. This is the basis for identifying institutional and individual elements of the Hungarian innovation system which could influence the described key factors or the Hungarian performance with respect to these factors. This analysis will be carried out in the concluding chapter 5.
