Abstract

This study delves into the comparison of molasses and Sika Plastiment VZ as set retarders in high-strength self-compacting concrete (HS-SCC). The research focuses on the workability, setting time, and mechanical properties of concrete mixes containing these retarders. The study finds that molasses, a by-product of sugar production, shows promising results as a retarder, with an optimal addition of 0.4% by weight of cement achieving the highest compressive strength of 67.43 MPa. In contrast, Sika Plastiment VZ, a commercial retarder, demonstrates a longer setting time, particularly at higher concentrations. The study also highlights the environmental benefits of using molasses, a waste-derived material, in concrete production. The results indicate that both retarders can effectively delay the setting time of concrete, with Plastiment VZ being more effective but molasses offering a sustainable alternative. The research provides valuable insights into the potential of molasses as a retarder in HS-SCC, contributing to the development of more sustainable and efficient concrete technologies.
