Abstract

This chapter delves into the transformative potential of composite materials in the shipbuilding industry, highlighting their advantages such as weight reduction, corrosion resistance, and high strength. It explores modern production technologies, particularly vacuum infusion, which optimize the strength-to-weight ratio of composite materials. The text also discusses the use of various fiber materials and resins, and the integration of hybrid structures combining composites and metals. Case studies from Damen Shipyards illustrate successful applications of these materials in patrol boats, passenger vessels, and workboats. The chapter concludes by outlining future prospects, including the development of biodegradable resins, automation of production processes, and the expansion of composite use to larger vessels. It emphasizes the environmental benefits and cost savings associated with composite materials, making a compelling case for their increased adoption in shipbuilding.
