Abstract

The chapter delves into the computational investigation of centrifugal compressors operating with air and supercritical CO2, focusing on the challenges and solutions in structural design. It presents three case studies, each addressing fundamental concepts such as fluid-structural interaction, structural design requirements, and backpressure balance. The first case validates the analysis method using a well-known air compressor, while the subsequent cases examine impeller geometries designed for supercritical CO2 applications. The study highlights the use of advanced computational methods, including one-way FSI, CFD simulations, and metamodel-based optimization. The results demonstrate the importance of considering fluid-structural interaction effects and the potential for significant improvements in compressor design through optimization techniques. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for further research in this area to enhance the efficiency and reliability of centrifugal compressors in CCSU applications.
