Star Alliance long considered Central America as one the last unchartered territories on the world map. This is no longer so: With Copa from Panama as well as the Columbian–Salvadorian airlines Avianca and Taca three airlines from this region are joining the large airline alliance. In return the alliance is anxious about losing the Brazilian airline TAM, which has been a member of Star Alliance since May 2010. Its fusion with the Chilean LAN –once its fiercest rival of all things – could again put its membership into doubt, as the latter is part of the OneWorld alliance.
