Abstract

The article introduces the Pre Rear-End Positioning and Risk Extenuation System (PREPARES), a novel safety system designed to enhance occupant safety during rear-end collisions. The study focuses on the concept development and testing of PREPARES, which leverages auditory and visual cues to prompt drivers to adopt a safer seating position before a collision. Human participant testing was conducted to evaluate the system's effectiveness, with promising results indicating that the bimodal cues can capture drivers' attention and reposition their bodies. The study highlights the potential of PREPARES to significantly reduce injuries in rear-end collisions, particularly in stationary vehicles, and sets the stage for further development and integration into vehicle safety systems.
